Where games, learning, and real communities meet.

Led by Associate Professor James York in Meiji University's School of Political Science and Economics, the York Seminar (ヨークゼミ) goes beyond classroom discussion. Students collaborate with elementary and high schools, local governments, and companies to create card and board games, town-wide mystery events, and location-based digital games.

What is the York Seminar like?

The York Seminar values student initiative, curiosity, and creative freedom.

Working closely with Professor York and fellow teammates, every student brings their own interests and strengths — whether in planning, communication, fieldwork, design, or analysis.

While our weekly sessions are warm, friendly, and approachable, we take our real-world partnerships with schools, municipalities, and companies seriously.

Q. What left the biggest impression after joining? Q.

Seeing children & locals play what we built

Taking games and mystery events out to elementary schools, Sumida River, or Hokkaido Hidaka Town and watching players genuinely get excited is something you can't experience in a lecture-only seminar.

Q. Did your impression change after joining? Q.

Warm & peaceful — yet genuinely project-driven

Professor York is super approachable and the atmosphere is peaceful, yet we partner with real schools, towns, and companies — giving you concrete project stories to talk about in job hunting.

Q. Who would you recommend the York Seminar to? Q.

Anyone curious about games, education, or communities

You don't need to be a hardcore gamer or programmer. If you want a one-of-a-kind theme in Seikei where you can shape ideas with friends and test them in society, this is the place.

Everything you might be wondering before applying.

Q. Is it difficult if I don't know programming? Q.

Not at all! The core of the York Seminar is not programming, but creating new value for education and society through games and play. Our activities span planning card and board games, running regional events, fieldwork, and creating digital games. Even with zero programming experience, you can participate using your own interests and strengths.

Q. Is it okay if I have never made a game before? Q.

Yes, almost everyone joins with zero game-making experience! We start by playing and analyzing existing games together to understand why they work, and then build prototypes step-by-step in teams.

Q. Do you only make paper card games? Q.

No! While tabletop card and board games are a major strength, we also design real-world mystery events (like the Hidaka Town Mystery Derby), environmental park games (Sumida River), and smartphone location-based digital mystery games (with the Okuyama Seminar).

Q. Is it suitable for students interested in regional revitalization or education? Q.

Absolutely! Many of our biggest projects are regional revitalization collaborations with municipalities and classroom lessons at elementary, junior high, and high schools. If you want hands-on fieldwork in communities or schools, you will thrive here.

Q. Can I join even if I just like playing games? Q.

Yes! "Loving games" is a wonderful starting point. In the seminar, we take that enthusiasm and ask: how can we use what makes games fun to help people learn, connect, or solve real problems?

Q. Is the class conducted in English? Q.

Absolutely not. In fact, the seminar is conducted ~95% in Japanese. You do not need to worry about your English level to participate fully in discussions and projects.

Q. How many students do you take each year? Q.

I have no strict policy on the number of students I will take, but typically somewhere between 10 and 20 students per cohort.

Q. Where can I learn more or ask questions? Q.
